Wildlife & Conservation

The Clyn sits on the edge of a remarkable protected landscape, bordering land designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and part of a wider Special Area of Conservation (SAC) network. The Elan Valley Estate itself covers around 180 km² (about 70 square miles) and is internationally important for its upland habitats, reservoirs, and ancient woodland.

Conservation here isn’t just a label on a map — it shapes the land you’ll walk through. Almost 80% of the estate is contained within multiple SSSI designations, and more than 6,000 hectares are included within three SACs (covering woodland and upland bog habitats). Much of the wider area also falls within the Elenydd–Mallaen Special Protection Area (SPA), recognised for its significance for wild birds.

This protected mosaic of ancient oak woodland, upland heather moorland, and blanket bog supports a rich range of wildlife. Look to the skies for red kites, and you may also spot raptors such as peregrines and merlins, alongside a variety of upland birds that use the area for breeding and feeding.

Nearby nature reserves make wildlife watching even more rewarding. The RSPB’s Carngafallt Nature Reserve is known for veteran oaks, wood pasture and internationally significant “Celtic rainforest” woodland habitat — a beautiful place for woodland walks and birdlife. Within the Elan Estate you can also find the Claerwen National Nature Reserve, an extensive upland plateau of acid grassland and blanket bog that provides habitat for specialist plants and scarce birds.

And of course, nature and history meet here. The valley’s celebrated Victorian dams and reservoirs form one of Wales’ most iconic landscapes — with infrastructure such as Caban Coch contributing to the water supply system that serves Birmingham, while also supporting habitats around the reservoirs and river corridors.

Finally, the Elan Valley’s conservation story continues after dark. In 2015 the estate achieved International Dark Sky Park status — recognition of the area’s low light pollution and exceptional night skies, making stargazing a genuine highlight of staying here.
